Abstract
The purpose of this research was to study the relationship between University- Business Cooperation and its effect on Innovative Business Performance. The study had three purposes. The first one, to examine the effect of the cooperation between university and company on the innovative business performance. The second, determine whether the size of the company and R&D expenditures are factors that influence companies to develop cooperation with universities for innovation. The third was to analyze, based on the results of the research, public policies aimed at fostering cooperation between the university and the company. The population under study in the research was constituted by the companies of Ecuador present in the 2010 Economic Census, which corresponds to 467 302 companies in the sectors of manufacturing, mining and quarrying, construction, commerce and services. The sample was stratified, by sector and province, was 2 815 in 24 provinces of Ecuador. In the research, the National Survey of Innovation Activities 2013, aligned with the international standards for innovation activities of the OSLO Manual and the National Survey of Science Activities, Technology 2013, developed by the Ministry of Health, was used as a research instrument and database. National Institute of Statistics and Censuses, INEC, and by the National Secretariat of Higher Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Senescyt. The methodology used in the present study was of quantitative nature and corresponded to the field of econometrics, and three different models were presented to obtain the answer of each one of the research purposes. Therefore, the first hypothesis was solved with the application of two models tobit and probit, and the second and third hypotheses with a logit model. As a result of the econometric application in its different models, it was obtained that university - business cooperation positively influences the development of business innovation. Likewise, the influence of the size of the companies in the university - company relationship was evidenced, but this double helix does not present a relation with the investment in R&D of the companies in Ecuador.
