From strategy to maintenance: Evidence from capital-intensive organizations

Abstract

This doctoral research examines the relationships among Entrepreneurial Orientation (EO), Smart Maintenance (SM), Operational Performance (OP), and Environmental Dynamism (ED) in asset-intensive organizations. Grounded in Dynamic Capabilities Theory (DCT) and Contingency Theory (CT), the study develops and empirically tests a structural model explaining how EO enables superior OP through the deployment of SM as a strategic organizational capability, while ED conditions this relationship. Using a quantitative research design, data were collected from managers in manufacturing and mining firms and analyzed through Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The results indicate that EO has a positive and significant effect on SM, and that SM significantly enhances OP. Furthermore, SM partially mediates the relationship between EO and OP, confirming its role as a mechanism through which strategic orientation translates into operational excellence. The findings also reveal that ED moderates the EO–SM relationship, with observable sectoral differences between manufacturing and mining contexts. The principal doctoral contribution of this study lies in integrating EO and SM within a unified DCT-based framework, demonstrating that SM constitutes a dynamic capability that strengthens OP under varying levels of ED. By positioning maintenance as a strategic capability rather than a purely technical function, this research advances the literature in strategic management and operations and provides actionable implications for asset-intensive industries.

Esta investigación doctoral analiza las relaciones entre Orientación Emprendedora (EO), Mantenimiento Inteligente (SM), Rendimiento Operacional (OP) y Dinamismo Ambiental (ED) en organizaciones intensivas en activos. Fundamentada en la Teoría de Capacidades Dinámicas (DCT) y la Teoría de Contingencia (CT), la tesis propone y contrasta empíricamente un modelo estructural que explica cómo la EO impulsa la OP a través del desarrollo de la SM como capacidad organizacional estratégica, considerando el rol moderador de la ED. El estudio adopta un diseño cuantitativo, recolectando datos de directivos de empresas de manufactura y minería, los cuales fueron analizados mediante Modelado de Ecuaciones Estructurales por Mínimos Cuadrados Parciales (PLS-SEM). Los resultados evidencian que la EO tiene un efecto positivo y significativo sobre la SM, y que la SM impacta significativamente en la OP. Asimismo, la SM actúa como variable mediadora parcial entre la EO y la OP, demostrando que la orientación estratégica emprendedora se traduce en resultados operacionales superiores cuando se materializa en prácticas inteligentes de mantenimiento. Además, la ED modera la relación EO–SM, observándose diferencias sectoriales que refuerzan la relevancia del contexto ambiental. La principal contribución doctoral consiste en integrar la EO y la SM dentro de un marco basado en la DCT, demostrando que la SM constituye una capacidad dinámica que fortalece la OP bajo distintos niveles de ED. Esta investigación amplía la literatura en gestión estratégica y operaciones al posicionar el mantenimiento como un habilitador estratégico de desempeño y no solo como una función técnica.
