Representaciones sociales de violencia contra las mujeres en autoridades de un distrito rural costero
(Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, 2016-09-19)

The aim of this research was to approach social representations (SR) of violence against women (VAW) in authorities from a coastal rural district. All of it, in order to understand the phenomenon’s meaning and explanations through a cultural, socio-historical and emotional perspective. The techniques that allowed knowing the participants and the context in which the social representations are built were the timeline, participant observation and the field logbook. On the other hand, the Natural Semantic Networks technique was used to comprehend the phenomenon’s definition among the authorities, while the semi-structured interviews, both definition and explanations. Overall, it was found that authorities have a bigger recognition of violence in the private sphere more than the public one. On the other hand, a double standard was identified: violence means to them the maintenance of unequal gender relations, but default of female roles was considered the phenomenon’s cause. Additionally, the participants can only sensitize with violence’s involved actors of their same gender. First of everything mentioned, punishment and violence are considered the only solutions to counter VAW, as shown in the core network sense....

remiten a las relaciones de poder asimétricas basadas en la construcción de género, la explosión sintomática de los conflictos de pareja, y la ruptura del tejido comunitario. Finalmente, se propone que el abordaje frente a esta problemática requiere actuar...
In order to integrate the cultural, socio-historical and relational aspects in the understanding of violence against women, it is proposed to study this phenomenon from the perspective of the social representations theory (SR) in a rural coastal district. Thereby, it could complement the definition of violence against women as a number of different concrete acts. To do this, timelines, participant observation, field logbook, the Natural Semantic Networks (NSN), and a semi-structured interview were used with a group of male residents of this district, who did not belong to any community leadership position. It was found that participants define violence mainly throughout their physical concrete actions, which had a strong sensorial element. However, on a deeper level, relational and emotional aspects that accompany this phenomenon were integrated. On the other hand, explanations of violence refer to the asymmetrical power relations based on gender construction, the symptomatic explosion of marital conflicts, and the breaking of community ties. Finally, it is proposed that the addressing of this problem requires actions at the different levels considered by the participants....
