The aim of this qualitative study was to describe the characteristics of the construction of gender identity in a group of nine “masculine women” convicted for criminal offenses. This data was gathered using a semi-structured interview. Three areas were prioritized: a) the conceptions of gender identity, b) experiences in the development of gender identity, and c) Influence of the prison in gender identity. Currently there are no investigations in Peru about gender identity nor the problems in this group of women within the prison environment. We sought to understand the particularity of gender performativity and how masculinity in a biological woman's body influences her relationships with others, particularly within the prison environment, where restrictiveness and heteronormativity prevail....

The aim of this study is to identify the gender roles and leadership styles that are given to high level managers by a group of students of Lima (Peru). The sample consists in 122 students, who described an executive director, a male executive director or a female executive director, depending on which of the three work groups they were assigned. The measurement scales used were the Sexual Roles Stereotype Scale (Raguz, 1991) and the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire 5X (Bass & Avolio, 2000). The results show that leadership continues to be masculine, even though there are no significant differences between leadership styles of men and women. For that reason, men and women with masculine characteristics are more likely to be hired than those with feminine characteristics. This study also shows that women in leadership positions go through incongruence between their gender role and their social role as leaders....

This paper aims at describing the personal agency and the gender-role stereotypes, as well as the possible existing interrelations of these two variables, in a group of businesswomen (100) working for small enterprises in the Municipality of Lima (Peru). To do so, two measurement scales were implemented: the Scale for the Measurement of the Personal Agency and Empowerment (ESAGE, for its initials in Spanish) and the Sex Role Stereotype Scale (SRSS). Results show that women have a medium-sized personal agency. In relation with gender-role stereotypes, it was found that both male and female characteristics are ascribe to women but only those traditionally stereotyped roles were ascribe to men. At the same time high levels of personal agency were especially found amongst those women whose gender role perception levels were, traditionally, less stereotyped. Furthermore, trying to understand the relation between the constructs and the age of the businesswomen, it was noticed that women aged between 41 and 55 years old ascribe less stereotyped characteristics to men....

Background: Current, in Lima, we can find various social issues related to gender roles and gender itself, which can be understood under a binomial perspective (male-female) or cross-identifications. The gender role conflict, construct created by James O'Neil, refers to the psychological state in which gender roles have negative consequences for oneself and others. The aim has been to adapt the scale of this construct, Gender Role Conflict Scale, to a university population in Lima, confirming its psychometric properties in the same population. Method: The sample consisted of 210 male students with an average age of 19.1 years. Results: The composition of the scale showed the original four factors, generally maintaining the original structure. Both globally and by factor, the scale showed acceptable reliability, between .84 and .86 depending of the factor; as well as a good convergent validity. Conclusions: This adapted instrument can be used to evaluate gender role conflict in university men from Lima....

Stereotype threat is the psychological distress experienced by an individual who takes a test or a formal assessment under circumstances where his or her performance could be interpreted using a negative stereotype about the skills of his/her social group (ethnic, gender, socioeconomic, etc.). Different empirical studies have demonstrated that the negative stereotype about women’s supposed lesser skills in mathematics and sciences in comparison to men, is widely spread and has the deepest consequences in women’s academic performance, learning of scientific abilities, and their vocational interest on engineering and science’s disciplines, including their dropout level from those majors. Stereotype Threat Theory has not been empirically tested in Peru. This research tests its presence among Peruvian women students at the beginning of higher education. Additionally, it tests in practice three methods for the inhibition of Stereotype Threat’s academic effects: the reappraisal of anxiety and stress, the exposition to successful role-models, and self-affirmation. Finally, analyses are performed to test the mediator effect of anxiety and effort. The results demonstrate the effects of Stereotype Threat and the efficacy of the inhibitory methods. They emphasize the importance of understanding the effects of this variable on women’s mathematical abilities, and the importance of using treatments for the enhancement of gender equity in opportunities in Peruvian higher education....

The aim of this research was to approach social representations (SR) of violence against women (VAW) in authorities from a coastal rural district. All of it, in order to understand the phenomenon’s meaning and explanations through a cultural, socio-historical and emotional perspective. The techniques that allowed knowing the participants and the context in which the social representations are built were the timeline, participant observation and the field logbook. On the other hand, the Natural Semantic Networks technique was used to comprehend the phenomenon’s definition among the authorities, while the semi-structured interviews, both definition and explanations. Overall, it was found that authorities have a bigger recognition of violence in the private sphere more than the public one. On the other hand, a double standard was identified: violence means to them the maintenance of unequal gender relations, but default of female roles was considered the phenomenon’s cause. Additionally, the participants can only sensitize with violence’s involved actors of their same gender. First of everything mentioned, punishment and violence are considered the only solutions to counter VAW, as shown in the core network sense....
